The „External files in media library“ plugin makes it possible to integrate files from many sources into your WordPress. However, if the sources are provided with access protection, please note the following.

Use yes, but not from outside

Files that are stored in an external source with password protection cannot be integrated into websites without further ado. Visitors to the website would not be able to access the files as they do not have the necessary access data.

The plugin now offers the option of integrating files from such sources into the media library. So you could also use them? Yes, of course. But not in such a way that the visitor loads them from the external source every time.

Such files are therefore generally downloaded locally to the media library and ultimately treated in the same way as any other local file. However, it still has all the characteristics of an external file as it originally comes from there.

Affected external sources

Several external sources are „naturally“ affected by this regulation, e.g. any FTPFTP File Transfer Protocol-/SFTPSFTP Secure File Transfer Protocol-Sources. DropboxDropbox Online data storage, GoogleDrive, Google Cloud Storage and AWS S3 are also included as long as no public access has been set up for these.
