The „External files in the media library“ plugin allows you to use files from various external sources, such as Google Drive. How to do this is described below.

Establish connection

First, you need to establish a connection to your Google Drive. Depending on the settings in the plugin, this connection is saved for all WordPress users in the project or only for your profile.

For all users

  1. Go to Settings > External files for the media library > Services > Google Drive.
  2. Click on „Connect now“ and follow the instructions.

Just for you

  1. Open your WordPress profile, usually via the user icon at the top right.
  2. Search there for „Google Drive“ and click on „Connect now“. Follow the instructions from here.

Note

For the connection, the Google Drive API must be connected to your WordPress. An app that runs via my domain www.thomaszwirner.de is used for this. You will receive a warning from Google about this, but you are welcome to agree to it. As soon as enough users of the plugin use such a connection, I can also have this app verified by Google, which would remove this warning.

Connect and view files

As soon as the connection is established, you can list the files in your Google Drive under Media > External files > Google Drive.

Importing and using files

You can then also import the listed files into the media library. Please note that although these are saved here as external files, they are actually integrated into the media library. This is because external sources that are access-protected cannot be made available to website visitors.
