Yes, absolutely. With the „External Files in the Media Library“ plugin, you store files on an external host rather than locally. This means that the limits on your hosting do not apply.

What's more, you can bypass the upload size. There are several ways to do this, which are described below.

Prerequisites

You only need to have the „External files in the media library“ plugin installed and activated.

Direct integration via URL

  1. In the WordPress backend, go to Media library > Add file.
  2. Click on the button here to add an external file.
  3. Enter the URL of the external large file in the dialog that now appears.
Note: If the URL is behind a password protection, you can enter it below. This also applies to FTPFTP File Transfer Protocol-Access data.
  4. Confirm the integration of the file as an external file and wait for the result.

The result is that the large file now exists as an external file in your media library.

Via an external source

  1. Upload the large file to an external storage location that is supported by the plugin (e.g. via FTP, DropboxDropbox Online data storage ..), high.
  2. In the WordPress backend, go to Media library > Add external files and select the type of external storage space here.
  3. Enter the connection data to the external source in the form now displayed. These differ depending on their type and are therefore not described in detail here.
  4. As soon as the connection is established, you can search for the file in the interface and import it into the media library.

The result here is also that the large file now exists as an external file in your media library.

Save locally

The last step is to save this external file locally. This is easily done in the following way:

  1. Go to your media library in the WordPress backend and view it in table mode.
  2. Find the file you are looking for here.
  3. In this file you will find a link „Import as real file“. Click on it and confirm the request in the dialog.
  4. The plugin then downloads the file, which is actually too large, to your local media library.
