I want to upload .tar.gz files—how do I do that?

Files with the extensions .gz and .tar.gz are not permitted by WordPress itself. This is primarily for security reasons, as these files are unfortunately often used for attacks or to infiltrate malware. With the plugin „External Files for the Media Library,“ you can still upload them to WordPress—as described here.

Activate setting

  1. Go to Settings > External files for the media library.
  2. Select the „Services“ tab and then „ZIP“.
  3. There you will find a checkmark to activate support for .tar.gz. Set it and save the setting.

Import files

As soon as the check mark is set, you can integrate files with the extensions .gz and .tar.gz into your media library in any possible way.

Opening and unpacking files

It is also possible to save these files in the media library and then open them to unpack individual files. To do this, simply call up the media library and click on „Open file“ on your file.

You can also unzip the file at the same point and thus save all files from the file in the media library. They are saved as external files, but are stored locally in your hosting.
