Plugins expand functionality, themes determine the appearance—together, they shape WordPress websites.

In WordPress, plugins and themes serve two fundamentally different purposes, but they complement each other well. Plugins are used to extend a website’s functionality—in other words, they add new capabilities, such as a contact form, a newsletter service, or analytics. Themes, on the other hand, are responsible for the visual appearance: They determine how the front end—that is, what your visitors actually see—is structured and presented. Put simply: Plugins handle the "What can the site do?", while themes handle the "What does the site look like?". Themes also come with their own design options. Using the so-called Customizer or modern theme options, you can often customize colors, fonts, layouts, or the arrangement of individual page elements without having to write a single line of code. Many themes also offer pre-designed templates for homepages, blog posts, or portfolio pages, so you can quickly create a professional-looking design even without any design experience. In practice, plugins and themes usually work closely together: For example, a plugin can provide new content elements, which are then displayed in a visually appropriate way by the chosen theme. It’s important to pay attention to compatibility—not every plugin automatically works well with every theme. Once you understand these basics, you can tailor WordPress websites both functionally and visually to your own specifications.
